Need help, herping in Mexico...

Morelia101 Sep 06, 2004 10:35 PM

Hi Everyone,

I live in Sydney, Australia and am travelling on vacation for a few days to the Cancun area of Mexico.

I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how best to find some rattlers and other species to photograph? I am thinking road driving at night is probably best but am a bit concerned about driving around Mexico at night. Is it safe? Does anyone have any experience with this? I don't want to get bailed up by some bandidos! I am also thinking that Cancun is probably quite built up. Does anyone have any suggstions on particular areas, towns, regions to go herpoing in with Cancun as a base?

Thanks much,

Morelia101

Hi Mate:

Yes, the people are more dangerious than the animals, with that said, if you stay close to Cancun it is reasonably safe. The local tourism board pays enough to the police to keep the "vermin" of town. If you stray out into the surrounding areas do it during the early morning hours, rather in the evenings. The herping is better and the bandito as drunk, passed out somewhere. The area does have a good size population of rattlers and others. Also, beware of the Morlets Crocs that live in the area if memory serves me, even in the resort lagoon. Not as dangerious as the Salty's but demands respect. The same Tourism councel does not want the tourists to know that they are there but they are. Many locals find their pet missing.

Good Luck,

Al
