Beautiful animals. They look like melanistic Cape/Baja Gophers, but probably another sub-species. Maybe someone more experienced with the rare pits can help you.

I agree to John Melzer,
this is a typical coloration of the bimaris!!
But aberant coloration of vertebralis... - so much is possible in the nature, why not this. With the amount of body blotches you can't divert those subspecies, they are similar. The other markings don't differ, too.
For Grismer all the bimaris are only a "colorform of the subspecies vertebralis" and for him they lost their subspecies status. But the sientific molecular biological works of Mr. Escobar a.o. for the Genus Pituophis don't agree with Mr. Grismer...
This litte excurse
only should sign that there are only a few little diferences between vertebralis and bimaris...
