Dandelion greens and question about runny stools.

shadow4108 Sep 07, 2004 01:03 AM

My dragon has never been seen using a water dish, and although he doesnt appear dehydrated, I want to be sure. I have heard that dandelions are 85% water or something like that. Is this true. Can they be used from the yard any time that they are growning, or are they only good at certain times of the year? Could I take the water dish out? I chop the greens after washing when they are still wet, and he eats them right away. Would it be bad to remove the water dish. Is it possible he isnt using it, or most likely not using it at all?

He's had runnier than normal stools lately. Any ideas what could be causing it. It started right about the time i started adding pellets to his diet. I removed the pellets but the loose stools stuck around. Any advice? he has a great appetite. His diet is still the same only the last batch contained mustard greens and the one before contained boc choi. And I started the pellets. Both of which he has never had before.

Any change in diet can cause the stools to become runny or abnormal for a few days. Keep an eye on them and monitor how they are doing. If the problem persists cut back on the greens for a few days and offer more hard food like crix, supers (if old enough) and such.

Be very careful of any outdoor plant you feed if you are in an area that sprays chemicals. They can be very toxic to all reptiles.

Dehydration can cause stool problems as well as a change of diet. Dragons do get a large amount of water from their greens, but we always suggest misting your dragon daily with a water bottle and on the cage sides. Most dragons won't drink water from a standing bowl, but drink it readily if sprayed gently on their nose or along the came walls where they can lick it off.

We do not use any water bowls with any of our dragons. They are misted daily, hatchings up to 4 times a day, and veggies/greens are always wetted down prior to feeding. We also soak dragons occasionally to help them rehydrate if need be.

Hope that helps,
brandon
