Michigan's Top Gun

Eddie S Jun 25, 2003 06:32 PM

Hello All,

OK. Everyone knows it. Michigan doesn’t have many snakes and few are impressive. But I think we have one that can hold its own against any other snake in the country. Yep, that’s right…I’m talking about the Blue Racer (Coluber constrictor foxi). It is big (up to six feet – honest!) and it is bad (protect your face when you grab one). But not only that, it is beautiful (the best looking racer by far).

So earlier this Spring I went to my racer hot spot. Sure enough we found 4 adults.

Here is the photo of one that was hoping it was not seen…

Once the gig was up, she started to get defensive…

But this one was not too onery and decided to make a break for it. After a high-speed chase and many lunges, I was finally able to properly grab it by the tail (grabbing anywhere else is risky!)…

In case you are wondering, I am 5 foot, 8 inches tall.

Just this week, I went back to that spot with my good herpin’ buddy Terry Cox. Here he is in prime racer habitat…

We did not find any. But that’s because Terry was lookin the wrong way!

Finally, just to show you why I think they are the best lookin’ Coluber out there, here is this photo…Enjoy!

...not sure why. Has the new forum changed the rules? Anyway, will try again.
