Purchasing an import, is it safe??

peterfromme Jun 25, 2003 06:36 PM

Hi,

I'm thinking of purchasing a baby green tree python from a local pet store. He told me that they are not captive bred, but imports. He mentioned that they have all been treated for parasites.

I'm I taking a risk with this? As anyone had previous experience with imports versus captive bred? I would really appreciate you insight...

Thanks,

Peter F.

I have seven Aru imports at the moment (2 from last year and another 5 this year) from Herpafauna in Indonesia and all are very robust and healthy. As far as I know, none were treated for parasites- they were cb babies, afterall.
However, I know of a few people who have had problems with imports, so it is really a judgement call based on how healthy you think the snakes are. If they are feeding and look fit (and have been in the country for at least a month or so) then I'd say go for it.
And, at the end of the day, there's no guarantee the animals bred in the next street are going to live forever.
Good luck, if you get them.
