Obviously most everyone here has an interest in Indonesia and
odatriad asked a question in DMexotics' thread that many might
be curious about.
"... Did you experience any problems/complications out there,
whether it be illness/customs/anti-American resentment?"
My wife is Indonesian and I have been to Indonesia a few times,
so I had a few comments. Indonesia is the most populous Muslim
nation, but don't let that scare you. You will find anti-American
attitudes almost everywhere these days. Although people there
might be critical of the US government, that does not affect
their behavior towards individual Americans visiting their
country. They are warm and friendly to foreigners (especially
caucasians). As a foreigner you are virtually above the law,
and law enforcement are easily bribed. Of course there is a
certain amount of crime but I'd walk down any street in Jakarta
at night before I'd do the same in a US city.
I wouldn't worry too much about illness, but I get the sh**s
the first week I'm there.
Here's a photo of a sweet komodo that allowed me to pet her.
