Scientific name for corns?

qime Sep 07, 2004 10:32 AM

I have seen two different scientific names listed for corn snakes on various sites around the web. Corns are either listed as pantherophis guttatus or as elaphe guttata guttata. Has the classification recently changed? Which is the current proper listing for a corn snake?
Thanks!

pantherophis guttatus is the current correct name for corn snakes. I believe that it was changed about a year or 2 ago, but im not sure.

The Elaphe species was changed to Pantherophis. With this change came the change to the ssp names as well. i.e. Elaphe Obsoleta Obsoleta is now Pantherophis Obsoletus obsoletus.

However, most people are reluctant to use the new change, just hard to get used to I guess, myself included.

Damn scientist cant leave anything alone.I think they all need to get together and find a cure for the common cold.Or better yet a beer with high carbs and tons of alcohol in it.I can think of a million other things they could be doing than renaming everything.
