Cage for 7' BT Cribo

ConradCA Sep 07, 2004 04:56 PM

I am in the process of building a new cage for my Cribo and would apprecieate any suggestions you have.

My current plans:

The cage is going to be 6' by 4' with 20" walls. The 6' side walls are going to be Plexiglas and the 4' side walls are going to be plywood. Access will be provided through the roof.

Base/Floor
I found a great table at Weird Stuff (a computer junk shop in Silicon Valley) to function as the base/floor of the cage. It is 4' by 6' and 20" off of the ground with heavy steel legs. Just about perfect for only $50. The table top is some sort of wood so I may have to do something to prevent water damage .

Walls
I also purchased 2 6'x20" Plexiglas panels with reinforcing ribs for the 6' side walls. The ribs are pretty good because they make a lip to rest on the edge of the table and hold the wall in place. The also provide a good place to tie the wall into vertical wooden 4x4s which will be at each corner. I am going to use plywood for the other two sides. I may not attach the sides to the table, instead I will use the lips on the Plexiglas panels to hold it in place.

Roof
Not sure exactly what to do for a roof. It will have to open up to provide access.

Misc.
I am going to put wheels on the table feet so the cage is easy to move around.

I'd reconsider the top-opening design for a couple of reasons.

1. It will be a pain to clean.

2. That will have you always approaching the snakes from above. That tends to make them nervous as that's how a predator would approach.

I'd also reconsider having that much Plexiglas. Indigos feel more secure in a more closed-in enclosure. That much Plexiglas will make it difficult for them to feel like they are out of sight.

Just my opinion....
