Wild Five-Lined Care?

khaeos Sep 07, 2004 11:10 PM

Hi guys.

Yesterday my cat brought me a juvi five-lined skink that had dropped its tail. So far it seems that his only injury is the lack of tail. I have been cleaning it with hydrogen peroxide once a day and applying an antibiotic ointment on the tip. It seems to be healing up nicely.

I'm located in Georgia, so we are in the middle of one tropical depression, followed by another. Tons of wind and rain. I'm thinking of keeping him until the bad weather has passed and his tail has healed over.

I know I shouldn't keep a wild creature, but he's active, has pooped once, and I just don't feel right releasing him into a cold puddle. (Also known as my back yard.)

Tomorrow I'm going to go pick up a 20 gallon tank, some bark bedding, and a UVB bulb. I may be going a little overboard for housing something for less than a week, but it wouldn't hurt to have the extra supplies, eh?

Er.. anyways. I was hoping to see if anyone had any tips.

Sounds like you're doing great! It's nice of you to keep him in a warm place until the weather clears. He'd be doing nothing but hiding anyway, and the warm environment will give him a chance to heal his tail without problems.
