Thinking about getting a turtle or two.

CDP75 Sep 07, 2004 11:48 PM

I would consider my pretty good with reptiles and stuff. Right now I have 5 cornsnakes, 2 ACF's, 1 pacman frog, a 29g freshwater tank and my 60gal reef tank along with a house full of other furry kids. I've even had an Iguana and a columbian red tail boa before.
Anyway after letting ya'll know a little about me....I recently had a friend give me a 55gal tank. It's very old and was in bad shape until I fixed it up. I was going to put my 2 african clawed frogs in it but changed my mind.
Instead, I'm thinking of turtles. I already have a nice light set-up with a basking area. Another friend who used to have turtles gave it to me. I also have several types of filters and many heaters.
What kind of turtles would be ok for this tank if any? I've been researching online and haven't really gotten anywhere. Some turtle ideas would help a lot then I can studied up on certain ones.
I was recently at a local reptile show but was unsure as to which ones to get. When asked, I was told pretty much that every turtle I looked at would be ok. Some of the turtles, I knew would be too big.
Any help will be great...Thanks.

Well after searching online all night, I going to get a mud turtle. I guess I'll look under that forum next for more info.

You might consider adopting a smallish male slider (there are some out there), although some males grow too large for a 55 gallon. A lone male painted would work in a 55 gallon as well. Those also come up for adoption from time to time.

A mud or musk would work, just make sure to keep the water level a bit lower than you would for sliders or painteds - give a female a laying area in the tank.
