Any material can harbor bugs and/or parasites. So yes wood can too.

Bacteria and molds and fungus, oh my... And it will generally rot away before too long from the humidity/temperature differential between the inside of the enclosure and the outside. I've built a couple cages (working on new one) and never really understood all this neat (not so neat really) stuff about bacteria and outside/inside differentials until I built my first cigar humidor.

Just think, a little box designed to keep cigars at 70% humidity and 70 degrees MUST have a minimum of 5/8" thick wood (not plywood, solid mahogany). Now turn that box into a 4' x 8' cage holding a monitor whose tail and claws beat the snot out of things and your wood degrading problem just got worse. Basically any wood exposed to the inside of the cage should be coated/lined with something not so porous (more or less waterproof) like fiberglass, epoxy, shower panelling, etc.

Although, as was already stated in the above post, anything can house all this bad stuff (just take a look at your bathtub), so regardless of anything I just rambled on about, proper husbandry and cleaning are your best friends to avoid pests and parasites...
