Not very smart at all. They seem more instinctual, which is to be expected. But my king and even the boas seem as though they show some curiosity. The balls don't seem interstd in much that goes on around them except hiding or escaping. I can't go near my kingsnakes tank without him popping up to see what's going on.
I would have to agree about the instinct thing, but there is still some personality. It's cool to see them change as they get to know you. I have this tendancy to kiss my pets on the cheek which is pretty intimidating for a bp (think big head, little snake). Syd (had him for over a year) doesn't even flinch when I do it now, even when he doesn't see me coming (like yesterday when he had clouded blue eyes). Nancy, on the other hand, is new to my strange behavior and she gets absolutely petrified (think BALL python). I think she'll change just as Syd did.
So, maybe not particularly smart, but not plants either
