Possible future pet horror story?

MightyPython May 14, 2003 08:24 PM

I went into an exotic animal shop a few weeks ago and looked around in there for a little bit. I basically only looked at the snakes and lizards. I noticed that they had digital hygrometers in the tanks and you could see the readings on them as plain as day. The ones I looked at said around 25 to 30% humidity and I noticed that a couple of the snakes had sheds laying in there that were in a bunch of pieces. I asked to talk to the manager but he wasn't there, just the store clerk was there. I just left after talking to her. Anyway, does that sound like something serious enough where I should call the place back up and bring it up again? I didn't notice anything else real bad, just the unusually low humidity. I wasn't sure if maybe the snakes I were looking at just required lower humidity, although sheds in pieces I know isn't normal for a snake. Anyway, any advice would be appreciated.

It really depends on the species. Some kinds of snakes and lizards thrive at that kind of humidity, and some don't. Shedding in pieces isn't always a bad thing, but shed stuck on the snakes is. I'd imagine that ball pythons wouldn't do so great at a constant 30% humidity.

I doubt very much that a Pet Store that actually has digital hygrometers in their cages could be accused of being abusive. Pet shop horror stories are generally reserved for places that are lacking in things like Heat or Water or Cleanliness. Not low humidity.
