Do you need a permit for CITIES II animals?

Grape Sep 08, 2004 12:14 PM

I was wondering if you needed a permit to have CITIES II animals? I am interested in getting two Aldabra tortoises and know that they are CITIES II so was wonedering if there was anything I needed. If I do need one, can anyone direct me where to get it? Thanks Alot!

Aldabras do not require any form of permit unless you are importing them yourself.

The only reason they are CITES II is because they are tortoises. Unless the list has recently changed they are not specifically listed.

Thanks Ed, I do have another question if u have a min, I have looked around the net for info on them, I mean I know the size, origin, stc, but I was wondering if there are anymore informative sites then just the bare facts. I mean, I have 5 sulcata's and there are pleanty of sites that have more then the name, size, and origin. Any idea's where I could find some, or are there any good books out about them specificly?

Thanks,

Grape

I've been selling them for 3 or 4 years now an have collected a decent amount of information on them. As you figured out, there is not much on the net about them.

The best book out there so far is one that was only published a month or so ago. Zoo book sales should have it in a couple of weeks if they don't have it already.

The book is Giant Tortoises of the Indian Ocean, Justin Gerlach, 1994

I don't agree with the taxonomy but everything else is fantastic. You will not find as much information in one place anywhere else.
