Hatchling eating...I feel that I have created a monster!!!!!!

shelby514 Sep 08, 2004 12:43 PM

Thanks to all who gave me advice as to my baby eating!!!! I 've been so paranoid, as she's now two months old and hadn't eaten a thing. I dropped a fuzzy in two nights ago and wham it was gone!!!! I literally did a seriously ecstatic happy-dance. But after eating, instead of retreating into her favorite hide, she sat on top and hadn't gone back in by morning. So I picked up another in the morning and wham it was gone also.

Complete change in her though, now I'm curious as to whehter she'd take another right away, she hasn't gone back into her hides at all (its been two days), is constantly on the move and all over her tank, still hungry???? Very odd, what a change from the regressive baby I had. Its fabulous!!!!! So thanks to all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Feed her once every 5-7 days for the next 3-4 weeks, you don't want to push her too fast until she has had at least a few meals (if she regurgitates, it will only set her back).

Good luck

Thanks for the advice and luck She had taken small fuzzies when I fed her. She's about 16 inches, but thin. Is the fuzzy big enough? Should I try a hopper, or not test my luck and stick with something that I know she'll like? I've have a yearling now who I started with adult mice and never had to worry. Lol I wish I had years of experience beneath my belt so I felt more sure Thanks again

I would stick with the fuzzies for the first few meals, but hoppers should be okay to. Just try not to push it too much until it has gotten used to food going thru its digestive track.

That last part about a psycho, bottomless feeding pit pretty much describes 90% of all Ball Python babies. After meal #3 or 4, a light goes off and 9 out of 10 babies turns into a MACHINE. It'll last until about a year of age, sometimes longer. They start out shy, but I've found baby Ball Pythons to be more agressive feeders than the Jungle Carpets and Boa babies!

You aren't kidding about babies being agressive eaters!

I got my baby on July 1st. Fed her for the first 2 weeks with pinkies then she wouldn't eat. Tried feeding her a tiny live mouse and she went right for it. Took her an hour to swallow cause she swallowed butt-first. A couple of weeks later I fed her a live. Waited awhile then tried to take her out of her feeding box. She bit me! My husband said she was probably hungry and wanted another mouse. Sure enough, put the next one in and pow. She was trying to tell me she wasn't done yet!
