moab collareds?

crotaphytusfan Sep 08, 2004 12:57 PM

so I went to moab, utah this last weekend out by arches national park and found no collareds. I was hoping to see some yellow heads. Is it to late in the year or what. Maybe I wasn't looking in the right spot. Could someone help so on a return trip I can see some.

I'm not sure if there are any collareds where you were looking, but I would guess you odds of seeing lizards would be looking in June or July. Hatchlings are out and about now, so a lot of adults are likely spending less time out than in the earlier months. I still think you could have seen adults if you were in the right places. It could be the collareds just seen you long before you seen them and made their retreat. Or...perhaps the rocks where you were looking had very few collareds. How was the weather on that trip. A cold front may have simply had them dug in for a couple days.

What was the weather like? John is correct about the adults shutting down this time of year.

I live in the 4 Corners area, not far from Moab. As recently as Sept 4 I was out where the lizards live around here and saw adult collareds. Not many, though, like a month ago. I was expecting to see hatchlings and didn't. We had a weather change the beginning of the month, lots of rain and colder temps. I imagine many have "gone under" for the winter.

I was very close to Moab and found alot of yellowheads in early
August. The others were correct in that late in the season, adults can be hard to find, but the youngsters should be findable. Mornings and evenings should rock if the weather keeps up.
