Pattern Variation of a Ringneck Snake, PIC

HerperHelmz Sep 08, 2004 02:15 PM

This modified pic shows what a ringneck snake in my care looks like. The line on the right side of the ring, is a little skinnier and the square looking things are supposed to be dots. This is on both sides of the ring. The ringneck is a northern about 8 inches long. I have NEVER seen this pattern in any ringneck, I'm thinking rare?

Southerns and Mississippis have interrupted rings. Im sure northerns can too, especially if it is an intergrade. Are you certain it is a northern?

HerperHelmz Sep 09, 2004 02:08 PM

It's not an interrupted neck ring, the snake has a full neck ring, as it is a northern, found in the middle of Pennsylvania, where no other SSP occurs. There are spots in a place where there are not supposed to be spots, I consider that unique.

Surely some slight variations are normal and commonplace?

Those pictures did not show the side of the ring though, where the spots are.

Oh my gosh! I have never seen anything like that. Far out! Have you reported it to any research groups? That is so unusual and rare, It may be the rarest snake in the world. You are definatly the Ring neck king, and a huge dork.

HerperHelmz Sep 09, 2004 04:47 PM

Wow dude, that's amazing! I am a huge dork, you're pathetic, you don't know me, don't make accusations about people if you don't know them. It's alright though, because I have a better life than you.

By the way, the word, dork, not cool.

I know you fairly well though and I must concur with the other poster. Have a nice day, Mr Herpetologist.

Why is everyone in such a bad mood? I don't have a clue if that thing is rare or not, but it seems like the summer heat makes more than just snakes a little angry. Maybe we should all just keep on herping herpely!

Mike just tends to post things that are a little more than outrageous. For a start, he says he had seen thousands of ringnecks and then later takes the statement back. He called himself a herpetologist when he is only a kid, and he tries to make illegal deals with snakes he found.

Nothing rare about the snake at all. It's almost like saying something is unique because because the belly spots are different. Like verykerry said, it's just normal variations of different individuals. The albino is cool, the one you posted is nothing special.

HerperHelmz Sep 09, 2004 09:11 PM

Erik, no offense or anything, but from the replies and emails I've gotten, this snake is actually unique. I do not know if you have ever had northern ringneck snakes, but they really don't vary much in color and pattern from locality to locality. But, this individual has spots in a place where I have never seen them, and when you have seen more than 500 northern ringnecks, that's saying something. Troy H said out of more than 800 ringnecks he studied(?) several of them had this pattern trait.

Also, drop me an email, I forgot your last name for the Prairie ringneck picture.

You're right. I've never seen any northern ringnecks. I've seen plenty of prairie ringnecks however (from MO to NM). Even they were different from each other. I've found ringless and ringed versions of arnyi in the same place within feet of each other. I guess you can say they were "unique", as are all individuals. But I stick to my guns and say that a line and some dots on the snake are nothing "special".

I realize you are young and probably feel proud of your find...and that's fine. But also realize that your find might not be impressive to other people. I (as well as others) think of it as nothing out of the ordinary.

snakeguy88 Sep 10, 2004 01:09 AM

According to you other posts you had seen millions. I think it is time to tell the truth. What is the truth Mike? And what about all the illegal deals you have been trying to make on all the different classifieds?

Fine, if you truly believe it is so special put it down, store it in 100% ethanol and start trying to find someone who can do genetics comparison with the Diadophis from your area.

breed it. I mean...a ringneck with a messed up ring? Who DOESN'T want one?! It will be the biggest thing since albino balls! I bet they will sell for a grand!(give or take a grand or so).LOL...what a joke. I suppose that many of the snakes I have found that aren't EXACTLY like all the others must be rare animals.

What you mean by a "modified" picture? Some people could take that to mean changed/added to, etc using photoshop or some other program....not that it matters to me....just curious what you meant.

On my computer, I have something called paint, I clicked on the paint thing, opened up a saved pic of a northern ringneck snake, and drew spots on the snake to show what mine looks like. Amazingly, some people in "other forums" just took it all as a joke, I guess most of them didn't understand that I drew the spots on the pic.
