Boa color change; real or not?

ginevive Sep 08, 2004 02:23 PM

I just rad this article about how boas can supposedly lighten or darken in color, due to outside environmental stimuli.
It might just be me, but it seems like my bci gets darker if he's stressed (like when I take him out of the cage, or after feeding time.)
Do you boa keepers ever notice this? Here's a link to the site I read about this on.
-----
2.1 Ball pythons: Goblin, Nothing, and Bela
1.0 Boa Constrictor Imperator: Apache
0.1 albino Cranwell's horned frog: Bene
1.0 Tiger salamander: Slasher
1.0 black kittycat, Inky
A bunch of Oscar cichlids, one giant pleco, huge breeding lot of "fancy" (read: deformed) goldfish, and me an' the boyfriend.

I've seen mine change in color as well. Sometimes it's from outside influences in the environment such as temperature, but it can also be mood related (one of my females will darken up when she's feeling particularly pissy), or even follow the time of day (I've seen several animals lighten and darken from day to night). Of course we all know the old standby of them darkening before a shed. Gravid females are typically darker as well...I personally think that aids in basking by absorbing more heat with a darker coloration. Realistically, I don't think we as humans can say exactly all the color shifts entail, but the fact that they can do is irrefutable in my book.
