Speaking of feeding Regal Ringnecks....

kw53 Sep 08, 2004 02:25 PM

the snake in the earlier post about extra nice Regal Ringneck eats lizards. Tried defrosted pinky scented with snake (garter snake and Night Snake), and a defrosted baby snake who hatched with a birth defect and was frozen as future snake food. No, no and no. Banded Gecko--yum. Once a captive snake starts feeding voluntarily, you at least have something to work with. I can get geckos, and other lizards, and it's usually a matter of time until the snake accepts scented, then unscented mice. I will likely hibernate this ringneck--give myself a little vacation from having to feed it. It may actually be more interested in eating next spring. I've kept this species before, and they come through hibernation just fine. Curiously, I have my first ever food-refusing Night Snake. Go figure.

Yes regalis can be a challenge, partic. w/ lizards. I find the half grown whiptails work real well (I shoot them & quickly freeze them).
Keep the faith tho....some regals will take pinkies, my biggest female ate her first last weekend!

If the maligned MF hasnt fled the country...mebbe he'll post a recent shot I sent him of a night snake acting like a freaking mussurana! I find most nights are pretty easy to convert using the cotton thread-trailer trick. The nights also have a much less specialized head morphology & thus can swallow much a wider prey item than can the comparative prey-specialist....regalis.

Good luck w/ your regal., jg
