Cage sizes?

crtoon83 Sep 08, 2004 03:09 PM

My black rat and licorice stick are both around 25 inches long...one is in a 29 gal and one in a 20 gal long. then my bairdi's are still babies...around 15 inches. What i'm thinking of doing is going down to home depot and buying two book cases and putting them back to back so they will be around 2 feet deep, 3 feet wide, each "tank" will be about 18 inches high. I was wondering, how long would these snakes be able to live in this size tank? I know i have no problem for the neonates, but what about the yearlings? I was thinking in the future what I could do is rip off one side and get two more to double the length..if need be. Thanks!

I only currently keep cornsnakes, but I should think that these cages should be good at least until they are 4-5 feet long.

I have designed a new plan for the snakes cages...turns out those bookshelves are really really expensive!!! I am going to build some that will be bisected down to 4x2x2 cages. I have read that rats should be in enclosures 1/2-2/3rds their body length...is this accurate? Also...how big do black rats get? I've heard many different thoughts on this. Thanks,
Chris

They can easily reach 6ft. plus. 8ft. is the standing record I believe. I live in WV and remove black rats from people`s yards, barns etc. who don`t want them around. I have seen three 6 and a half to seven feet long black rats this year so they can get pretty long.

I keep my BR in a 40 gallon long at the present time, but may like yourself in up building something bigger when he gets older.
