Panther diet advise PLEASE (kind along)

red_eyed_magalie Jun 25, 2003 08:36 PM

Hello Everyone!

What a great place to have so many people offer their great advise and assistance...I LOVE KS!!!

Anyhow, (now that I am done sucking up) I got this beautiful male Nosey Be and wanted to give him the best nutrition and keep him as healthy and "beefy" as he already is....He seems to be ok with the crickets and showed no real interest for the wax worms so I was wondering what else to give him...I also give him water through a dripper and he really loves that, but what other treats would you guys recommend? Please don't say roaches...I think I might just die if you say roaches...I live in FL and roaches are not something I think of as food for my prized possession.

I've read that silkworms are great along with crickets as their staple diet. I've also heard that occasionally, mealworms and superworms are good for "treats". Anyone want to confirm this? Thanks!

He'll love you forever if you give him Silkworms.

Allso recommended are Giant Green Horned Worms.

I also recommend to go to www.mulberryfarms.com to order these morsels. I just spoke to the guys at Mulberry Farms and I was told a) they will be reducing the minimum order (yay!) and b) they plan to allso start offering crickets (double yay).

Some other treats are pillbugs (aka sow bugs from your garden), moths, and houseflies. Of course, be very careful with any insects that you catch as they may have been exposed to pesticides and other bad stuff out there.

Also, don't forget to both gutload your crickets and *lightly* dust them with vitamin supplements.

Hope this helps!

The key to best nutrition is not just insect variety, but gutload. If you want the Cadillac gutload the recipe is on www.adcham.com. It takes effort and time to make up, and for one cham it makes a lot, but most really serious keepers swear by it. Also, there is a great commercial gutload and dust combination made by WalkAbout Farms. Go to www.herpnutrition.com and read the articles there. Some people who use it find they don't need to dust every day, but add a vitamin and a mineral dust about once a week instead. Lots of great nutrition info. As for other insects, try large houseflies, moths (dull colored night moths), mantids, smaller grasshoppers, stick insects, silkworms and superworms (Zoophobas).

Very good suggestions on the cham buffet.
Just a note: Chameleons really love to hunt down a flying or fast moving insect. I think it brings out the hunting instinct in them. (It's really really fun to watch the hunt too.. many of my chameleons were "not-so graceful" in their abilities)
