Injured chin

deetu Sep 08, 2004 07:39 PM

I did it. He was a little sore from having his mouth pried open but I slipped and my nail got him. I think it pulled the skin away from his jaw.

Did I damage him for good or will he heal? What can I do to help him heal?

I think these guys were hatchlings and not two months like I was told. He was finally starting to notice crickets and actually ate one on his own today, then lost interest. That was the reason I am still force feeding him. He can't afford to not be fed, he's so small.

The cricket on pushed on his nose didn't work. I really didn't think he needed a syring feeding but will definitely be having to do that now since I don't want to make him worse.

Oh, I feel so bad.

Those poor babies!

I wonder if they were even eating on their own when you got them. They look less than 2 weeks old--maybe even 1!

I'd put in a big complaint with the breeder you got them from...

One of our local pet shops is notorious for selling hatchlings--the youngest I saw were less than 4 days old and for sale!!!

Good luck!

Also if the skin on the chin has pulled away then it will need stitches for sure. If it has not "closed" up by Thursday you need to see a vet for sure. Apply neosporin on wound tonight.

from what you posted there is not way to know if this is a minor goof or a major problem. when in doubt get to a vet asap!

if you did tear or cut the skin away from the jaw then the bd may need a few stiches to hold the skin on the right place till it heals.

also you may well need an antibiotic to keep from having the wound be infected.

get a vet to check the wound out and advise you.

You can make a liquid-food by mixing vegetable/chicken baby food and pedialyte. Put it in an oral syrringe and just put a drop on their noses... they should drink it without being forced.

I'd definitely contact the breeder if they told you those are 2 months old. There's no way they're that old... unless they started counting when the eggs were laid.

They might have just hatched and haven't started eating yet?... either way, I'd do the pedialyte baby food thing just to be safe and offer a few "very small" crickets each day to see if they become interested.

I tried doing the syringe on the nose and they just will not lick it off. Well, one is...you guessed it, the one that's eating fine.

I was going to bring the one eating well back but he is half the size of the others in the tank so I will have to keep him a while longer. I am going to set up a different tank for him because he makes a pig of himself.

I watched and it took a long time for the other two to notice the cricket, then try for them. The cricket usually get under the paper towels and they give up. Maybe I can form fit the towels and dampen it so it will stay down. If I leave crickets in the tank throughout the day (with cricket food available so there is no beardie nibbling) they may start hunting.

Oh, by the way, the lip is back and seems to be staying. The vet said to put Neosporin on it too but I really cannot see how I could without most of it getting into his mouth. (He is really tiny)

Arrgh, what did I get myself into here???
