Urates? what is this???? blood hasn't defecated in a while.....

Okay, so it has been a little less than a month since my blood last defecated. So as i was putting her to soak i noticed some very hard oddly shaped "balls" near her cloaca. Some of them feeled pretty big, i am assuming these are urates and will pass very soon. But if not what are they? also are there any other ways other than a warm soak to get a snake to defecate?

Hey,
Bloods and short-tails, have a very high propensity for retaining stools for very long periods at a time. This is common, and should not be cause for alarm. A good soak can usually remedy the situation, but there are others that will consistently retain stools and urates for longer periods. Even months. If you are careful, you can after a soak massage the area of the cloaca and gently express or squeeze out the urates, making sure not to press or squeeze too hard causing injury. A firm but gentle squeeze in the direction of the tip of the tail, is usually all it takes to extract retained urates.
