its deff a corn snake. i kno that for a fact. 1, it has the corn markings, 2 its got that mark on its head, 3 the belly is checkerd, and last the marks on the face. i looked in the "corn snake manual", to see if i could find out what kind of corn, and it said it was from south east florida. i asked you guys just to make sure. i live in bethlehem PA., which is bout 20 mins from the Pa/NJ border. the customer said it was on a river bank right by the border.

Check the anal plate. If its single its an Eastern Milk. They look very similiar. 1.Milks have a y or v on their head and 2. they also have a checkered belly. There is a milk snake phase corn, but I dont think thats it. Maybe some others will have some input on this.

They have a similar head arrow as corns.

Trust me on this, I have caught HUNDREDS of them in Ohio and KY.

I'd bet the farm on it. That's an eastern milk snake. It will get darker as it matures, and the blotches will turn brownish.

That's a very typical looking young eastern milk.

jamesmildren Sep 08, 2004 10:45 PM

From the first pic, I'd say it's a jungle corn (not pure corn). But the second one makes me wonder. If it's a pure corn, it looks closest to a Crimson.

i appriceat the imput, and im still looking for more. i mean, i kno you guys are the experts compaired to me, but i do know 100% for a fact it is a corn snake. i was looking at more photos on line, and ive come to the conclusion that its a "miami" phase, atleast according to this web page. http://www.reptileallsorts.com/cornphase/index.html
its discription is prety good, compaired to the snake.
thanx again

its a crazy little baby, so it likes to strike alot. when it pulls back in striking posision, its in a perfict S shape with its head, neck, and an inche or 2 elevated off the ground. and the other thing is, its tail goes crazy like a rattlesnakes im still sure its a corn, just not as sure as i was 10 mins ago. does this sound like corn behavior?

Well that sounds like typical behaviour for most snakes when nervous - you've described a textbook defensive position.

Honestly Nevin, this genuinely isn't a Corn Snake - we're not trying to be arsey or rain on your parade, it just isn't. You won't find any with that amount of pure black, and the body markings really are all wrong. The head and belly markings do sound like a Corn I know, but they are common to quite a number of snakes if you're just going by a description from a book.

Could you point us to the page in the Corn Snake Manual, or the web sites, where you think you've found pics of your guy posted as a Corn? We might be able to iron out the misunderstanding.

Whatever it is, it's certainly a good-looking little beast. My money's on some kind of King or Milk, but I'm definitely no expert on those so that's as far as I'll go! I do know Corns though, and that it ain't.

PHLdyPayne Sep 10, 2004 12:48 AM

I am not an expert identifying snakes, but I think I know what picture he's referring to in the Corn Snake manual. It does look alot like a Miami Phase corn snake...but looking at pictures in other sources of the Eastern Milk, it does look alot like one of those too, especially with the head markings. Same with the 'milksnake' phase cornsnake. (re. page 78 'Cornsnake Manual' by Bill and Kathy Love)

For some reason I can't see the first picture so can only go by the second picture posted. CLoser more clearer pictures of the top of the head may make it easer to see the pattern there.

You are 100% wrong.
That IS NOT a corn snake.
Sorry, but that is an eastern milk snake.
You came here to find out what it is, it has been identified as an eastern milk snake, why do you refuse to believe?

That is either a eastern or red milk. They really do look like corns, but they are heavier bodied, and like someone else stated, it should have a undivided anal plate. Kingsand milks have a single plate or scale. Corns and other rats have a divided plate. Also little milks are notorious for crapping and musking when startled.

You know it's just that snake people just get a little NUTTY when we see something being mis-identified.

We are weird that way.

Eastern Milks are cool snakes though.

Hotshot Sep 09, 2004 08:08 PM

That is an eastern milk snake. What part of the county are you in?
