Fruit Fly Infestation!! HELP!!

ccgerbilclan Sep 08, 2004 10:15 PM

Hey everyone...

well, my basement is infested with fruitflys. Everything I have read has said that they breed in organic matter that is kept moist i.e.My Frog Terrariums.

It said to remove all breeding areas, but of course, I can't remove my frogs...so what should I do? It's really starting to bother me. I found a bunch of them sitting on a newly born litter of gerbils!! Enough is enough!

if you use bed a beast or similar product in you tanks i would change it, the reason is b/c when kept too wet the FF start to lay eggs in it, but they really won't harm anything

Clean out the frogs cage. place the frogs in a different container while your cleaning it out obviously. Do you have to keep your frogs in the basement? if no you can close off all ventalation in the basement and put in some raid insect foggers to whipe them out. if you do fog it then leave it closed off for about 24 hours after fogging to help eliminate any survivers. then i would suggest keeping it well ventelated for at least a few weeks before putting any animals back in the basement... only do the latter if it is really, really bad. other wise just take out the frogs and let the basment sit for a week or 2.

fruit flies can be real pest when you have animals. Any moisture will keep them going. Eggs hatch in about two weeks, so your going to have to keep all the cages dry and clean until they die off. In the case of the frogs, you just have change the substrate at least once a week to be safe. You can place a couple of fly traps around to catch the adults. To make trap mash up some banana and put in a jar with a funnel as a lid you can use electrical tape to secure it. Make sure the funnel is pointing into the jar and empty every week so your not breeding more.
