Breeding success feeding mice only?

Tad Fitzgerald Sep 08, 2004 10:39 PM

Any ball breeders out there utilizing mice only? I have been told breeding results is better if females are fed rats. I'm interested in starting a small albino ball project and won't have easy access to live rats. I do have a mouse colony so have live mice. I would attempt to transfer them to ft rats but if unsuccessful am courious how breeding success would be with only mice?

With my experience, which isn't a ton-but some, you can for sure do fine feeding females mice. My females haven't had all mice, but for sure have been fed mostly mice, and they have done fine. I have one female that laid me a clutch of eight eggs last year, and eight again this year. The other clutches I got this year were of 9 and 6. My female that laid for me last year and this year was able to put the weight back on, even when just being fed mice, within a month after she laid. The thing is, obviously, when feeding all mice it just takes a LOT of mice. She would eat seven to ten at a time. You sure rip through your mouse supply when you are feeding off that many at a time to your large females. That is why I have started to try and get some of them to take rats. Anyway, hopefully more people will chime in, but that is my .02.
