timor sexing

drzrider Sep 09, 2004 01:49 AM

One of my monitors is a Timor. I have never seen it evert a hemipenis. It is not as easy to see as it poops as a bigger monitor (hehe). Anyway, are there any secretes that have been discovered that help to determine the sex of timors other than probing? I will not let any monitor of mine be probed, it is too dangerous.

I don't know any secrets for sexing Timors, but
offhand, I'd say yours looks like a male. That
is obviously only a guess.

I would say male too, going by the shape and size of the head. But then again, this is just an inference, as we all know, nothing is 100%unless it lays eggs..hahaha...

Not seeing hemipenes does not mean it's a female.. And seeing something pop out of your animal doesn't necessarily mean that it is in fact a male, as female's will often pop too, and many people fail to recognize that as a female, and assume that it is a hemipene. Perhaps you can take some more pics from different angles of the head and talbase, maybe we would be able to make more sense if we had different angles to view..

I cannot count the times my V. beccari have fooled me... Some days a particular animal will look female.. Other days it would look like a male.. However, in most of these cases I saw, the animal in question did in fact, turn out to be a male...damn he-she's...hahaha.

So, I am leaning towards male in your case, but then again, pictures are often difficult to sex animals, and they are notorious for throwing curveballs...("males" ending up laying eggs)..

Take care,

Ive heard too many suggestions for it, no, they are not snakes, the hemipenes and hemiclitori on many species are the same length or are so close in length that probing would not tell you anything. Not only that, probing your monitor can do permenant damage, again they are not snakes, they are built different. I dont care how much a vet tells you it can be done or how safe it is, or how accurate it is, dont do it. Sexing can be accomplished by secondary characteristics, by witnessing full eversions, or by someone with experience doing so popping them, and most accurately by somewhat healthy females laying eggs. Post better pics of the tail base from the side, bottom, etc. My old male timor is very very obvious.
