Timor monitor

tokaygecko Jun 25, 2003 09:08 PM

Hey Ive had a timor monitor for like a year and a half and I STILL dont really know how to take care of it! I couldnt find any info on them other than they stay small, so when I saw one for cheap at a herp show I grabbed it. It turned out to be a much emaciated little female. I wanted a timor instead of an ackie or any other dwarf monitor because..well they look more like a monitor if you take my meaning. They dont lok chunky.so I fattened her up on crickets(which is all she will eat) and out her in a big wooden cage with a basking sopt of 100-110 and a cage temp of approx 90. I wormed her, and he acceps drinks of water from a glass if I hold it up to her. I am a champion tokay gecko tamer, but Ive given up on this monitor she is psycho. does anyone have a tips for me? she seems to be thriving but I dont know if thats good for the long run, she is my first monitor, after all.

They are beautiful skittish unhandleable monitors so appreciate them for what they are. Ive had monitors for 12 years, mostly African species with a Timor thats 3.5 years old and still appreciates me being on the opposite end of the glass from him. I tried the occaisional handling but the animal would rip its claws out if I handled him more than once a week. Try mice they will suprise you on how big of a thawed mouse they can eat, that and it reduces the amount they eat because of being a large prey item for them. Mine eats one large adult mouse about once a week, and hes a gargatuan 27 inches long and strong as a horse.

We've had a timor for about 6 months now and he is pretty tame(he is no ackie ). He was young when we got him and I believe that has a lot to do with his disposition. Timors in general are rather flighty, so you probably aren't going to have much luck. I am willing to admit I got lucky with mine.

And Im afraid I dont know what you mean about them being more "monitor-like" in morphology. A healthy monitor is a meaty one. My timor is very rounded about the dinner muscle. Hence the name Pudge.

Maybe you should get something more social to fit your needs.

The head is a bit longer in relation to the body than that of the ackies... So proportion wise I can see that they look more like a 'big' monitor. I personally always thought they looked like a nile baby that never grew up.
27 inches is a monster timor!
