Anyone heard of "striped ratsnakes?" more...

Kevin Saunders Sep 09, 2004 10:07 AM

I noticed this in the classifieds today: http://market.kingsnake.com/detail.php?cat=60&de=246648

From the description, I assumed they were hybrids but I thought I'd see if anyone here has heard of them before. They look kinda like a black or gray rat to me, only striped. I'm really curious to know how they look as adults now. Unless I'm forgetting some, I can't think of any N.A. rats that are striped as juveniles. If no one here knows anything about them, I may try e-mailing them to learn more. Apparently they've been around a while, so hopefully someone here will have some info.

Ask Kathy about those snakes, they've been around awhile. The original female is probably 25 years old by now if its still alive. I recall seeing it in 1979 or 1980 if memory serves.

Thanks. Do you remember what that female looked like? I'll see if Kathy can tell me more about them or if she has any adult pics.

This is one of mine... a two year old male.

Wow that looks pretty cool. Thanks for sharing.

It looks like a Yellow with very faint lower stripes. Is this snake bred from obsoleta or guttata?

stevefounduk Sep 09, 2004 06:35 PM

Obsoleta.

It is an intergraded yellow/everglades, the offspring of which were further intergraded with a hypo black rat.

A real mutt.... but very pretty. The photo really does not do the ranges of yellows and oranges justice.

Thanks for the information. I know that Kathy is Miss Cornsnake, but your snake looked a lot like a normal Yellow Rat. Maybe you can post some better pictures so time that show its colors a little better.

Is this color morph stable? That is to say that if you crossed two adults with this coloration, will all the offspring have the same coloring and pattern?

stevefounduk Sep 10, 2004 03:07 AM

Yes it does seem to be stable.

I have seen the parents of these and they look extremely similar, and mine look very similar to the original.

Here is a link to a Dwight Good discussion on them from 2003.

In the photos, they didn't look striped. $50.00 for a mutt. What a deal! With that said, why not ask the person for pictures of the parrents. Then you might have some idea of what he is selling. The photos that I looked at were very small, and hard to make out what the snakes looked like. Some of them looked like Baird's Rat Snakes to me. I would want a lot more info before I paid out $50 for one.

stevefounduk Sep 09, 2004 06:39 PM

Agreed...

I paid 40 pounds stirling for the PAIR of mine in the UK. About $25 each I reckon.

Kevin Saunders Sep 09, 2004 08:08 PM

I don't have any intention of buying them, I just thought I'd try to learn more about them. I thought $50 was a little steep too, but they may turn out nice as adults. They're definately out of the ordinary. If they are glades/yellow/black, I'd expect them to look more like greenish rats. They're het for albino, so they've probably got some black rat in them. Could be from an albino yellow parent, but to my knowledge albino black rats are more common.
