Reg ringneck care help.

Lia Sep 09, 2004 03:53 PM

I am interested in a couple of ringnecks (not regals) for a 20 gallon long .
My only experience with small snakes is a dekay snake. I would like to ask a few questions.
are ringnecks active at all or allways hide?
what is ideal temp? I live in miami but use ac for 68/70 temp but ofcourse can use heat pad or incandescent bulb.
can they be kept on just earthworms or need other foods?
can TWO be kept together or will this be a problem?
I imagine set up is same as dekay.
Thanks.
Lia

Hi, I am in Deerfield and have kept lots of our local brand of Ringneck. Earthworms are an ideal food for them (only a very large specimen will eat small lizards). Since they like to spend time under things, I recomend a couple of good pieces of bark on top of a mixture of potting soil and cypress mulch.

A five gallon tank will work fine for a pair, as they do not get large in our area (about 13" is very big). Don't worry about heaters because they are acclimatised to our temps. Do mist daily.

A good substrate temperature for southern ringnecks is between 70 and 80 degrees F.
You can keep two together, but watch them while they are feeding, they can begin a fight over food and you may end up with one ringneck.

Thats far more space than two need. They should do fine....
