Bamboo preparation

MikeAndMegan Sep 09, 2004 07:33 PM

I have decided to put some nice bamboo sections in our Cresteds' cage. Ive got 3 sections varying from 18" to 28", about 2" in diameter. The only place I could find such pieces was in a 6 foot section at Hobby Lobby. I've seen bamboo in some other peoples cages and it looks really nice. Unfortunately, the outside is sorta dirty. I have sanded the surface to remove any layer of dirt, and thouroughly washed them too. Is there anything else you guys would suggest I do? I have heard of people "baking" wood, but I thought that was to kill any bugs in it. I am sure there are no bugs in this wood. Plus, two of the pieces wont fit in my oven.

Thanks,
Mike

By the time it reaches the consumer bamboo should have been already "cooked" to kill the bugs and bacteria that would eventually cause it's decay. I would recommend sealing it to prevent contamination and bacterial buildup. Poly/Varathane in satin finish would be fine.

Hope this helps.
