I currently use ceramic tiles as substrate, and am planning to add a "mezzanine" level to increase the floor space. I wanted the mezzanine to be irregular in shape, so I tried knocking the corners with a hammer, but the piece of tile just shatter and cracked in all directions. How can I just knock a corner off, and make the sides all irregular, but not damaging/crack the part that I want? Here is a mock up of what I'm trying to do:

well, im telling you this as a mason stone/brick/clay tile mason for 5 years. unless your really good and can do it with a hammer you need a speceal chipping tool. but the easyest way is to go to home depot when you buy it, and have them cut it with a wet saw. unless you have your own wet, or masonry saw. the cage will look good when its doen, im sure.
