pixie problem

HunnyDipt Sep 10, 2004 01:17 AM

Hi there. I have been reading alot in forums about pacmans going into a state of hibernation where they don't eat, get lethargic and skinny, and have dry, plastic-like skin. Well, this is what is happening to my juvenile pixie frog. I got him on August 8th and he was doing very well (eating lots, really active, and getting bigger) until around the 20th when he stopped eating. Now, he looks like he is going to die. He made this weird squawking noise when I picked him up to see if he was stiil alive. Has anyone experienced this with a pixie frog, or are the pacmans and pixies so similar that I should just assume hibernation/brumation?

the fact that u said its 'skinny' worries me a bit, fairly sudden weight loss in any reptile/amphibia is not really a good sign

any chance of posting a pic for others to see ? , i dont have any personal experience of pixies so couldnt tell if what u have described sounds normal

if u r really worried a trip to ur nearest reptile/amhpibian vet wouldnt hurt !!!

Hi Gary. Thank you for your fast response. Unfortunately, my frog died during the night. I still can't figure out what went wrong. I did everything 'by the book'. The only theory I have besides the fact that maybe he was carrying a parasite/disease when I got him is this: I know that goldfish emit alot of ammonia when stressed. Well, I had this one goldfish in my frog's pool for about 3 days. Since my frog wasn't eating, the water hadn't been changed because it was still clean and free of poop. So, I don't know what it was that killed him. Thanks again for your response.

Just make sure you do not give up on the species. They are definitely my favorite frog and you should consider getting another at some point. Just for future reference, any uneaten food should be removed, whether it be fish, frog, mealworms, mouse, worm, etc. Good luck and sorry for your loss.

Thank you for your condolences. I will not be giving up on the species at all. I have wanted a p.adspersus for about 3 years now and we had just finally got into the situation to own one. I am planning on phoning the petstore from which I ordered him to see if any of the other frogs purchased are still ok. I'm hoping to get another one around the end of October, although he will not be the same (boohoo). Bye for now.
