New tanks

lisa_cristin Sep 10, 2004 02:04 AM

Hey all, long time no type. Anyways, I've finally set up my permanent (hopefully) tanks. Let me know what you think.

The first is a 33 gallon housing my two females. For heat there is an UTH and a heat lamp for night viewing. Temps usually stay between 90 to 95 on the hot side. There is a UV light mainly for viewing and the live plant, I know it's a bit unnecessary. The floor is tile with play sand in the cracks. I'm still very unsure about using even such a small amount of sand so that may be changing soon. On the bottom level there is a live plant, a large terraced water dish, a humid hide (well hidden), two other hides (including the reptile den), plus some rather natural hides (not completely hidden) under the slate and wood. On the slate there is a calcium dish plus a little box. I'm really trying to get them to do their business in the dish in the far top left. It has a bit of sand which would make it easy to just scoop out. I also find the smell of their poop much less noticeable in sand. So far it's working with one of them.

Btw Dan, your new male/female is absolutely stunning. Snarks I'm glad to see your still around

Here is the other tank. This tank houses my male leo. Unfortunately, he was supposed to be a she so this tank is a bit last minute.

This tank is a low 15 gallon. The heating/lighting/flooring is the same as the other tank. The stair case on the left has a dish on top which I'm using for calcium. In the back behind the columns there is a humid hide. I'm trying the litter box in this tank as well.

Anyways thanks for looking. Give me some feedback. I can take criticism as I'm always looking to improve.

Lisa,

those are great looking tanks! The lighting, are those bulbs the same? They look like different colors. Do you use red lighting?
Also, unrelated to your setup, but was wondering, what do you use in your humid hide? My leo seemed to ingesting some moss that I used (probably when she shed and ate the skin). So, I am currently using paper towels.

Thanks!

Where do you get all those cool stairs and such?
They look awesome, and i don't think the sand will affect them honestly I've kept my female on sand for about 3 years until i recently switched to tile. I also put paper towel on the tile where their bathroom area is, it doesn't really reduce the smell but its eaiser to clean.

What do your leos look like now? have an recent pics?

Hey Snarks, the stairs were form a waterfall that stopped working, the rest of the stuff is mostly from pet stores.

What are you using in the cracks of the tile? I was just sticking paper towel in but the crickets always managed to hide under it.

I don't have any new pics of my leos, I really need to get some. The tang is so pretty now and all of them are so big.

Thanks for the compliment,
Lisa

Thanks, the lighting actually isn't the same, sorry I forgot. In the large tank there is a 50watt red heat light. In the small tank there is a 75watt blue light. The blue light gives off heat, but not as much as the heat lamp, this keeps the heat at almost the same temps.

I'm just using paper towel as well. I'm just not sure about moss/bed-a-beast and mold. My frog tank has bed-a-beast and I used to have a real problem with it moulding when it was too moist. I don't see how moss would bother the leos digestion or anything. I can't see it causing impaction unless there is a very large amount of it being eaten.

For my cage I use silicone caulk in the cracks and the feeders cant get through. You can get silicone caulk in squishey tubes (like tooth paste tubes) At the hardware store probably, But I got mine at Home Depot.

Isn't it really difficult to disinfect? I know you can just wipe down the tiles but how do you get them out to clean them?

those are AWESOME enclosures!!! i just LOVE them!! and the sand/litter box idea is so awesome!! i can see that one of them is using it *points at poo* that is just so cool!! how do your females get along?? i'm going to start a leo breeding project and i'm hearing different things from everyone. some say its best to keep a few females with a male, and others tell me that i should keep all of them separated - even the females. what do you think??

Well i actually use a heavy linolium in my tank. To clean it without taking the linolium out i use a product called GSE (grapefruit seed extract) It is an all natural, all organic dissinfecting product that is very easy to use, All I do is ad about 10-20 dropps into a squirt bottle with water, spray it and then wipe it down. I think that GSE is about seven dollars a bottle and you can probably find it at the health food store or organic food market (I get it at Wild Oats)

To be totally honest I'd say keep them separated if you can afford the time, space, and extra $$$. All of my leos were supposed to be female and I had planned on keeping them together from day one. They all came from the same breeder who said she would house them together for me to make sure they would get along, so there was no need to quarintine. They didn't get along and very often mistook each other for food (at least that's what it seemed like). So for a while and until I could be sure about their sex I separated them.

So far the two females seem to get along ok. I'm hoping things get better rather than worse or I will have to separate them. My albino is definately bullying my tang a bit. So far I haven't seen them actually fight or bite each other. When the tang tries to eat out of the mealy dish the albino becomes a bit dominating, giving a look that makes the tang back away. I have been making sure that the tang is still eating just as much as the albino but it sure is a pain.

One nice thing about having them together is they do seem more active. I also love seeing them sleep together which they do 75% of the time. There are so many places for them to hide and I know they really don't like each other much, so it is strange that they are always together.

Thanks for the compliment. Here is a picture of my old set-up when I had to keep them separated.
