Need Heating help.

austin3613 May 14, 2003 08:39 PM

Hello, I am new to the hobby of keeping dart frogs. I would like to get everything right before I get the actual frogs. I know that summer is almost here, but in the winter it is very cold in my basement where I keep my various tanks. The temperature can drop to almost 50F degrees . Can anyone suggest a good method of heating up the tank? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Eric

Hi,

I think you might want to look into keeping the frogs in a different room or insulating the basement. The only way that I know of to heat a cage 25-30 degrees is to use a very high wattage light bulb or ceramic heater and both of those tend to dry out cages. Since dart frogs like the humidity pretty high those might not work well. You might be able to shield off half of the room by hanging a thick blanket up as a wall or something and use a small space heater to heat that half of the room up into the mid 60's. You could then heat the tank with an undertank heat pad on the side of the terrarium which is generally the best way to heat terrariums. Probably the best solution would just be to keep the frogs in a warmer part of the house if thats possible. Good luck!

I would suggest a space heater to raise the entire ambient temperature of the room. It will probally be the most inexpensive way to do it, if you dont mind heating bills. Heat lamps and such arnt good for dart frog tanks because they will try it out too much. You may also look into heat tapes, it will be a little more costly to initally get set up but will probally save money on electricty costs down the road.
