The 4th worse experience of my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!! kind of long but you might get a kick out of it..

Joel R Sep 10, 2004 10:49 AM

I could have died last night & today! I have a super hyper sensitive nose & a weak stomach so this was my worse nightmare.

Last weekend during the hurricane, our power flickered off & on for about 2hrs. then it went out for a couple hours. Well, yesterday I could smell something throughout the house but couldn't figure it out. I thought it might be time for a complete cage cleaning. Well, last night when I was in the garage cleaning all the days worth of food dishes (animals) & a few baby snake bins, the smell was stronger. First I thought there might be some trash somewhere I didn't know about so I started looking & couldn't find anything. Then I thought maybe something got into the garage & died. (lizard, snake, whatever). Then I thought I'd better check the mouse freezer! I opened it up & just about passed out! I immediately started gagging. I had to open the garage door, turn on a big fan & spray a ton of airfreshener.
I did feed the snakes a day or two after the storm but they were still frozen so I didn't know it was out! I guess with all the surges during the storm, it popped the GFI in the outlet & I just didn't know it.
Well, I plugged it back in last night to let them refreeze & I had to clean it out today. It was one of the worst things I have ever had to do! I puked several times. I don't think I'll ever get the smell completely out of the freezer. I used bleach & odorsban several times & it still stinks!

I put the 100 dead black & green beyond the smell of decay mice out in the woods for the vultures. Hopefully my puke doesn't keep them away. lol
I have to go wash & change my clothes.

I hope no one ever has to go through that. I am going to put some kind of light in that outlet so I know if it goes out again.

Later.

... the prospect of opening that freezer.... urgh.

I work in a forensic lab, and some of the samples we see smell somewhat ahem, strong. I recall one time we evacuated half the dept because of one sample.

where in FL are you? we're down in kendall and we managed to avoid any power problems with frances. now ivan on the other hand... time to put the shutters back up.

good luck for the next one.

There is no way I could do that. I couldn't be a trash man, a Doctor or Vet. I can't even clean a dang fish. lol

Speaking of forensics, I was thinking after I was cleaning the freezer & dumping the mice, If anyone saw me, they might think I was getting rid of body parts. To top it off, my wife just went up to SC. for a funeral. lol They'll be saying, "what happen to his wife". lol

We are up in Jacksonville. We only got the outer bands of the storm but it still put a lot of trees on a lot of houses. A lot of people lost power, some are still out. We lucked out here in our neighborhood I guess. We only lost if for a couple hours.

I have my rodent freezer outside in my gazebo. I had about 100 small and medium rats in it. One of the dogs aparently tripped over the plug and about a week later I went out to get some rats to feed and when I opened the freezer that had been cooking in the Florida sun for a week, it was all I could do to keep my breakfast down. I put on a gas mask and even through that I could still smell it. I emptied the freezer into a double heafty bag. The rats were so bloated they looked like balloons. I put the bags on the street for garbage pick up and waited for the police to come. I figured the smell and the heafty bag would have gotten their attention.

The good news is the smell does go away but the memory will never leave you.

FIRST...... I'm an electrician and have wired MANY houses and am licensed here in OK...... So.... Most houses now are wired for a freezer in the garage. There should be a "dedicated" circuit in your garage specifically for the deep freeze.... If not.... Just take out the GFI and replace it with a regular receptical. When you open the cover if there is another recep down line from it (there will be two black wires and two white wires if there is)figure out which one it is and swap the GFI with the regular recep. That will eliminate that problem for good without haveing to add a light. You really don't need it in anyway as The GFI is only there incase say you were running a saw or drill and standing in water....LOL Like the bathroom and Kitchen where water could be present we are required to put Gfis in to reduce the risk of electric shock.....
Also try tomatoe juice soak then rinse that with cocacola adn then bleach again. My brother and I were sprayed by a skunk and that combo killed the stench.... Course death is a step or two above skunk I guess....LOL Good Luck!

Man the smell of one rat left in a snake cage by accident for a couple of days is horrible. Forget 100 of them. that really sucks.
