Female ovulating while being alone? is it possibe?

ritamcfarsons Sep 10, 2004 11:01 AM

i have a 6.5 feet female that had planned to breed next january and a 5.5 male. they are housed separately. i had planned to cool them in dec and introduce them in jan. however 10 days ago she had a large meal and a week later passed the feaces. now she has a kind of lump around a foot above her cloaca. i had read about a mid body swelling that moved dow which should be the eggs or follices. could it be the lump? its definitely not the stomach. if its so what should i do? the male is still eating and maybe not in breeding mode? if she is not bread will she act like preg but they would be all slugs?

thanks for any help, and please help

Female boas, especially big BCI, can ovulate at any time of the year with or without a male being present, especially if seasonality or cooling has not been provided as they grow.

The idea that the presence of the male is what gets the female in the mood is a kind of male-centric myth left over from after the game rides in high-school .....

I cannot tell from your photo what is going on with that boa but if you suspect she is ovulating you should introduce her to the male.

Good luck.

i have searched all i could but couldn't get a definite answer.

1) can she still be breed succesfully in her state?

2) if she is not breed now would she reabsorb the follicles or give birth to slugs only?

you opinions and experince would be very helpfull

ps. i live in a small island in the mediterrenean so i will not be competing with you guys to sell my eventualy baby boas
