A good shedding rock?

sunfox Sep 10, 2004 11:20 AM

Ra is going through yet another shed (man, he's growing fast!) and is dragging his arms all over everything (his arms are just shedding, he's fine) and I was wondering if there was a particular rock that would make shedding easier by catching the dead skin and holding it while the uro pulls away to get it off. Would a piece of rough brick work?

By the way, Isis is recovering by leaps and bounds and will get her stitches removed next week. The only problem I've got with her right now is her tail; there is so much stuck shed on it (it looks like a couple of unsuccessful sheds' worth) that I thought it might be tail rot. The vet looked at it and very gently pulled off a piece. It was a thick layer but there was very sharp spikes under there as well as a beautiful shiny jet black colour. Does anyone have any suggestions about removing this extremely stubborn shed? (I've tried baths and creams but these don't seem to be working).

Thanks all

But I am really glad to here about Isis!

I had to resort to gently prying off the old shed. If it was ready to come off and just stuck, it actually came off pretty easily, though Archie was not thrilled with the experience, he also did not seem any worse for it.

Good luck with everything!

well there are always pumice type rocks that people use on their feet and what not but they are a little light so if he tries to rub on them he may just push them around unless you can somehow plant them. that is my only suggestion with that and i have never tried it before on a lizard.
i also have tried on a collared lizard, wrapping him in a warm towel for 5-10 minutes and then rubbing mineral oil on the tough spots. i think you said this was for isis who probably is not on sand right now so that way you would not have to worry about sand getting stuck in her tail. anyway i hope that helps.

My uros like the "repti-log" have log hiedouts. They're smooth on the inside, but outside they have a really rough bark coating, and they can snag loose skin off. I occaisionally see them rub thier eye lids on it if they get some sand in there, too.
