Anyone have any pix of adult white sided rat snakes?.. more

phflame Sep 10, 2004 12:17 PM

I have one baby and would like to see some pix of the adults. Do their patches fade away into a black stripe or do they stay gray patches? How long do they end up? What size cage do they need as adults? My baby is doing great right now, eats like a champ, had shed once since I got him.
Thanks for any help.

I assume by patches you mean the dark and light blotches in their dorsal stripe. From what I've seen, they retain them as adults. They will darken with age to grays and blacks, but you will probably be able to see the blotches still. Some of them do not have these patches in their stripe, like mine. Their stripes are more speckled looking as babies, instead of the alternating patches. However, from what I've seen they tend to have lighter gray backs. I've attached an older pic of mine. He's under a year old and still doesn't have his adult color, but hopefully it will help illustrate what I'm trying to say about the dorsal pattern. He's the only one I've ever had, so I'm no expert but I've seen some posts on the subject before. Mike Joliff posted some good pics showing the differences before I believe. Mine is from his bloodline as well. I hope some others will post adult pics for you-I love the look of the adults.

I had heard that the stripe got much darker as they matured, but apparently not. I like the gray stripe that my baby has, so it is good news that it doesn't get black. I love Mike Joliff's pix of his snakes, thanks for reminding me of them.

yes the retain stripes. thats why they are called white sided, not a totally white snake.
