Good Q. NYS herpetologist has been recently quoted as saying that color fades by the end of their first year. But I've had a pictigaster that has retained this coloration and it was born in the fall of 2000. However, the color is duller, and no where near as brilliant as it was at birth. This could be due to differences of wild vs. captive born animals, subspecific differences in diet and the ecological need for a lure and/or latitude/longitude, or neither. Or, it could have nothing to do with species at all, but rather the individual.
