Substrate/Heat

spot012 Sep 10, 2004 09:21 PM

Ok, I need a UTH for my tank. It's a 10 gallon and there isn't much of a heat difference in the sides. I've tried but can't find anything that works. Since it's getting towards winter I really need a better source of heat but I have a plastic tank. I found a UTH you can use on plastic tanks but my problem is my substrate is paper towel and it's not thick enough. I'm not sure what to change my substrate to that wouldn't cost me too much money..(I'm a little low on cash)So if anyone could help me I'd appriciate it. Thanks

Would the tile be thick enough? I know tile conducts the heat well but couldn't it get to hot?

I use tile and it works perfect

What kind of tile do you use?

I use ceramic tiles you can buy at home depot or menards or a hardware store if you hardware store carries them.

Thanks...I was thinking about putting a layer of the carpet under it just to make sure it doesn't get too hot. I really want to make my cage look nicer. It looks so dull when after I look at everyone else's setups.

i use tile as well,
try the ceramic outdoor-like tile stuff that has lumps and grit to it. Otherwise your leos will be sliding around.

if you're worried about temps and that's a valid worry just get a thermometer and check the surface temps. I also use human heat pads which have 3 settings and i leave it on the lowest setting unless its too cold

Also don't worry if your set up looks bland. Just as long as its functional and safe for your leos and they're happy it doesn't matter :D

Good luck

the bottom of my tank on the warm side is 104.5 degresse F. Is that too hot? I just assumed that is wasnt because I know that rocks get VERY hot in the sunlight during the day so it would be even hotter in his natural invironment.

Are medium size crickets too big for a baby? The pet store gave me mediums even though I asked for smalls and said she/he would eat them. They just seem so huge. I got 50..so she/he will be eating them for awhile but just to know for next time. Thanks
