light , heater safety

janome Sep 10, 2004 09:28 PM

I currently have 5 snakes and 2 anoles. All housed seperately with their own heat sorces. Snakes have UTH's and a couple have lights. My python has a basking light for day, red light for night. My corns just have incandecent lights for day so I can see them (when they are out and to help heat tank). My milk just has a UTH and my new baby gopher is on a human heat pad, which is temporary till I get him a bigger house. I've had my snakes for 2-3 years now set up like this.

My concern is the risk of fire. I have the lights and heaters plugged into those power strip things. My python and anoles on one strip and my corns, milk on another. Opposite side of the room, so not in the same outlets.

I became concerned when my bosses house caught fire and destroyed everything becasue of faulty lighting on their reef fish aquarium.

Am I safe with the way I have mine set up? I've felt the cords and none of them feel hot or anything. And they are on timers so they go off at night. The only light on is the red light for my python to help with heat. The UTH's are on 24/7.

Please can someone ease my mind.....

Most herp fires are because of misuse of heating components.

Flexwatt should be run through a dimmer, thermostat, or both.

Light bulbs should not be screwed into those plastic fixtures commonly found on heat lamps. Take those out and replace them with ceramics, even if you're only at the 40 watt recommended maximum.

Deviations from above are the two most common causes of reptile cage fires. I'll be curious to hear what other suggestions you get.
