do hondurans really need an UTH

janome Sep 10, 2004 09:36 PM

I have a yearling tangerine dream honduran milk. Housed in a 20 gallon long. I used to have a incandecent light on his tank along with an UTH but took it away. I read they don't need it since they hide 24/7. So now I'm wondering if he really needs the UTH.
He has a couple hiding places. When I take him out to hold him he is always on the cooler side of the tank, usually under the water dish.
I know some of you are thinking the UTH is too hot but it's not. By the time I place newspaper over the UTh (the glass is hot) then reptile bark you can not feel the heat much.
We keep our house around 76-77 most of the year. I've read the black milks don't need heating. Will hondurans do ok with out heating also?

IMHO all snakes need a warm side, and a cool side so they can thermoregulate themselves as needed. I would say the UTH is probably too hot and needs to be ran off of a rheostat or dimmer switch so yo can control the temps. Remember, most snakes like to burrow, so if the UTH is hot to your touch, it is most definitely too hot for your snake.

Warm end should be around 80-82 and the cool end would be fine at the current temp of your house (75-76). The best way to be certain is to place a temp guage into the warm side. I just lay mine on the bottom of the cage. If it comes with the sticky backing, take it off before you put it into the cage, so it does not become stuck to the snake.

Good luck and happy herping
