Back from Palm Springs, CA...not a good trip for herping.

I thought I might get lucky, and possibly scare up a bicentores, or even a vestigium, but no such luck. I tried a few different areas that looked wonderful. I kept thinking to myself how awesome it would have been to be there one or two months later. Oh Well, things don't always work out.

I did manage to see about 7 Coleonyx variegatus variegatus (Desert Banded Geckos) and some Uta stansburiana (Side-Blotched Lizards). I was excited about seeing the geckos. I have searched for them the last three years I have been going there, and have never seen one before. I found about 5 adult males, two adult females, and one female hatchling. I guess I'll share a couple pics.

This first trip is one of a very few pictures I took in Joshua Tree Natl. Park. It was very cold, so I didn't stay long at all.

Here is one of the typical geckos I was finding. This guy was especially friendly. He must have liked the warmth of my hands...I nearly had to poke him off with a stick (just kidding).

Why you ask, because this is of course the collared lizard forum, and I needed a suitable name

I liked this little guy. I love the irridescence of these guys. It was a bit cool out too they posed nice for pictures.

Sorry, no collareds were seen (pretty much expected that though).

Yeah, probably a bit too early in the season for the two species of collared you mentioned, John. Cool pics, though! The earliest that I have encountered C. vestigium in the field (in San Diego and Imperial counties) is March, although I know of a couple of folks who have stumbled upon one in February. Come back in the spring...IF we get some decent rain around here between now and then!

Nice Photos! I wish I could have met you there, but had to work. I went out looking for rock art on thursday south of Palm Springs. It was sunny but cool. I saw a couple of side blotch lizards and came across 3 banded rock lizards hanging out around an old spring. Hope you can come out here in May sometime. There will be tons of lizards!
