The problem with Hurricanes

amaxim Sep 11, 2004 08:19 AM

Just a little rant on my part, but I am getting sick and tired of these hurricanes. There's the damage, the power loss (somehow managed to avoid that one), the stress (on the animals and myself) and all that other stuff. But hey, I chose to live here, so I accepted all that stuff when I bought my house knowing it was a possibility. It's not that stuff that is getting under my skin. My problem is that there is no wood available and I want to finish my new enclosure!!!! It's been sitting with the bottom half-built for near a month now and I want to finish the darn thing. Just a few 1/2" sheets of plywood is all I need so I can start fiberglassing, but it's all up on everyones windows. Some people can be so insensitive to the needs of others, taking all that wood to protect their homes when I need to make my monitors comfy. The nerve!

On a serious note, good luck to everyone here in Florida (and elsewhere) with Ivan. Stay safe.

Some people.... This may affect prices of ply nationwide, which is no good for me even though I live in Ohio. Look at it this way, you may get a good deal on the ply that people take off their windows once the hurricane season is over. Stay safe.

Nope, sorry. We may keep ours up until the end of hurricane season. And then it goes in the garage to store for the next hurricane season. Just bought a second generator as an 'insurance policy' on the one we used after Frances. I ain't doin' this no power s**t ever again! That is, if I'm still here after this next one

Y'all come on down!

That pic was very funny. I am glad I am up in Carolina for this weather. We mostly just get rain from these hurricanes. Good luck with Ivan. I hope it drops below Cat. 5 before hitting Florida. Y'all have had enough.

There are water dragons, chameleons, frilled dragons, pythons, and monitors in my jungle room.

With frances sitting on me but I couldn't zoom out far enough to get her all in LOL

Here are some pictures of a little bit of her wrath as it hit here. These are tame compared to somethings she did while here.

Ah, yes... The Florida pine tree. My husband, who was born here, says that what they do best is live 20-30 years... and then fall on your house. We lost some trees to Charley, then Frances came and bent down all the rest. Hope those weren't your care in the photos. My roof looked worse than that, we have it fixed now just in time for Ivan, who hopefully will go bug somebody else this time.

This time I have TWO generators. No more trying to lug lizards in and out of the one room with air conditioning and power for basking lights to try to help them have the opportunity to thermoregulate a bit. As I've heard so often on this forum, they really do tell you what they want. I got so I could tell by their actions who wanted to cool down a bit. My big tegu discovered that 'Mom' had riggged him a hide filled with damp cyprus under his water tub, which, by evaporation, made it cooler than the rest of the enclosure. It's amazing just how smart some of these lizards really are. Thank goodness I don't have anything over three feet!

Yes 2 of those cars are mine. Trees and roofs fell all over around here. My house held up great, that roof is my nieghbors and it is worse then the pictures. When the winds switched sides it removed the tar paper as well exposing wood. This lead to their bedroom ceiling getting wet and caving in.

A1A down by us has a chunk taken out of it. Looks like a giant gator took a bite.

Must be nice to only have to move some little reptiles, almost everything I have is over 3 foot. Thats what i get for working with the big guys.

Yeah, most of mine are small, but there are over 30 of them, counting the babies. Good luck with your hurricane cleanup. My new refrigerator just got delivered today. Let's just hope Ivan stays far away.
