Same eye problem, new photo.

kevie Sep 11, 2004 11:37 AM

I posted a similar message a few days ago, but here is another photo of the eye problem in my ball.

It looks like an unshed eye peice right? I'm dropping water on his eye several times a day and I'll start trying to get the peice off with a Q-Tip in a day or so like someone said. (By the way, thanks for the suggestion.)

Actually I would not try and remove that. That actually looks like the current eye cap and you could cause harm if you try and remove it. I had a ball python with a very similar problem and I could not figure out what was going on because she was getting one piece sheds with the eye caps coming off every time. it turned out the CHE I had on that tank was drying her eyes out despite the fact that I was holding good hunmidity and having great sheds. What is your setup for that ball? If you are using a CHE I would get rid of it and use only a UTH and cover most of the screen top with plastic. I have not had a problem since. I do not cover screen cages with plastic but that is because every snake in the room is tropical and I run a humidifier and spray from time to time (the bp with the problem was not in the room at the time and was in more of a display cage..thats why I had the CHE). I get perfect sheds unless I am gone for a weekend when a snake is in shed and I do not run the humidifier and am not there to spray. I also have a bunch of bright eyed snakes with no problems. Sorry for the long post...I just do not know how you have the snake set up so I wanted to offer simple solution if you have many snakes in the same room or if this is a single tank. Either way I would get rid of any above heat that could dry your air and if you use a lamp..just put a normal 60 watt house bulb in there to add a small amount of heat onto what the heat tape is giving you and cover the rest of the cage with plastic. If you do not use a lamp...cover the middle and leave an inch or two for ventalation on each side. If you are using a rack...I have no idea and my theory on the snakes eyes is pretty much shot down. Good luck!

When I got one mf my males, he was in such a state. He had a retained eyecap, and also some retained skin. I made an overly humid setup for him and left him in ot for one night; it consisted of a medium sized rubbermaid with about a centimeter of warm water and a bunch of wet sphagunm moss (unmilled.) I placed the UTH under it to keep things warm (it was on a low setting) and added a small rubbermaid hide for him. Next morning, the eyecap rubbed off using nothing more than my fingertip.
Putting in a damp washcloth or towel might even make it possible for the snake to rub the cap off itself.

What is a CHE?

This bp's set up:

20 gallon long
UTH covering about 1/3
bark substrate
60 watt normal overhead light
Hide box and climbing branch

He spends most of his time in the hide (which is over the UTH) or in another hiding spot on the cool side. The humidity is always over 60, and when I'm misting (before sheds)it is up around 80%.

Anyone else have any ideas about if this is a retained eyecap or not?

Ceramic heat emiter and I would cover the top with plastic and change the substarte from bark to newspaper or carpet for about 100 reasons. maybe even get rid of the light if you are keeping good temps. respek, keep it real.
