Showing off my new cage!

uglykid2 Sep 11, 2004 12:55 PM

Hi everybody, if you've already seen these pics on other forums I apologize, please disregard, otherwise, enjoy! It is 2'x2'x6', the bottom is 3/4" melamine, sides and top are 3/4" oak ply, the back is 1/4" vinyl coated mdf and the inside is lined with Con-tact paper. The bottom oak panel is removeable to access wiring and controls and the panel above it is a 4" litter dam. More pics to come ...

On the bottom of the cage I routed and chiseled out a 2 foot square area 3/8" deep for the 2 pieces of 11" wide, 2 ft long heat tape. I had never seen or heard of this being done so I was nervous about doing it. I was concerned about the heat not being able to penetrate all that plastic and particle board but I didn't want wiring or heat pads inside the cage to interfere with cleaning. As it was I didnt need to go so deep as I keep having to turn the heat down even though the light bulbs are only 25 watts! Next time I'll just skim off the layer of plastic.

great looking cage . You find the bulb cages protect the snake from being burnt?
I ask because thinking of a cage with bulbs inside with bulb guards ofcourse.

Do you have a hide for him/her? My 9' burm will not leave his even though the temps are just under 80 in it. We were chattin in the burm forum and it seems allot of snakes prefer the cooler temps. However; the cage itself is art man, pure art!

A dwarf is already 8 ft. at 16 months of age? Is that normal?

I made the bulb guards with 1/2" hardware cloth. You can buy it most places by the foot or a 10' roll. Just cut out the size you need with a pair of diagonal pliers and wire it together and screw it in place. In this case I counted out 12 squares and that was big enough to cove the bulb and fixture. A LOT cheaper than buying ready made ones at the pet stores.

I was wondering how you made the the awesome looking background in the cage?

Looks so nice! Was thinking about perhaps including it in my upcoming terrarium.

Thanks.
