room too hot

maclen Sep 11, 2004 02:52 PM

okay i have 3 100 watt, 1 red glo- 60 watt, 1 day time 60 watt, 1 heat rock, and 1 UTH in my room. my problem is that it raises my room's temperature to about 86 degrees and my house's temperature is about 76. my parents are complaining that the AC bill is costing a fortune. is there anything i can do to help reduce the heat in my room besides getting rid of my animals? (ps i know heat rocks are bad but not in this case so you don't need to lecture me)

Don't know what kind of bulbs you have, but I find I can use lower watt bulbs if you get spot light bulbs. They cost more than standard white bulbs granted, but they put the light/heat where you want it, and can give higher cage temps, lower outside temps, while using less power. Oh, and ditch the hot rock.

haha the hot rock is in my tokay gecko's cage and seeing as how he never goes on the ground it is good enough to heat is cage up. so no harm done. i do have the fixtures that create hot spots but bearded dragons i figured would need a 100 watt at least in them. what are the spot bulbs that you use called and where do you buy them?

You can get basking spot lamps in most pet stores. I like Zoo Med's personaly, because you can get them in two packs somewhat cheaper. I find a 50 watt spot will create as much or more heat in a basking spot than a 100 watt house light depending on how close it is. And being a lower wattage, the bleed out of heat and power will be less. I would also recomend hitting a home supply store such as Menards, and checking out an indoor/outdoor digital thermonitor. The little probs on the ends of the longer wires make it quite nice for getting onto a basking spot and see how hot that is, while the indoor portion will tell you the ambiant temp.

As far as heating rocks... As I understand it, the concern with rocks/pads is not so much the heat the give when working, it's what happens when they get old and the thermostat inside the rock breaks down. It will superheat, and the lizard will cook befor it realises it's too hot. People's houses have burned when the internal thermostat breaks, the pad fries, shatters the glass it's on, and sets fire to a desk or dresser or shelf under the tank.

Then again, I probaly do things that are not generaly recomended or recomended against, so take it as you will.
