Well, when a pipe broke under the mobile home where my mother was living and we didn't see the leak for several weeks, we found dozens of tiger sals happily slopping around in the mud.
It's a method, but expense-wise, I would not recommend it!

probably during breeding season, which brings me to my point. Depending on what species your after the best way to catch them it to check and see when they breed in your area and then look for them. In Maryland where I live, the best times for most salamanders are the first warm days of spring and the first cold days of fall. I generally find spotted salamanders in the spring and marbled in the fall. Woodland salamander like red back and lead backs, are abundant in the Spring and Fall months.

You said that you find marble's in the fall, where, when? I find spotteds in the beggining of the warm mounths during the first few rain falls, but I never found the marbles and thats what I really would like to catch.

You need to check your State and local laws pertaining to wildlife. In most states there are limits on the species and numbers that can be collected. Most critical for you are the laws of many states which prohibit the capture of reptiles and amphibians by any means other than the hand or a hand held device (like a net or lizard noose.) It is very possible that using a trap to catch salamanders is against the law where you are. Another aspect of a trap is that it takes environmental control away from the animal and they will quickly sucumb to changes in temperatures etc as they can't seek other options, they are stuck in the trap.
