New Mali ?

ta2edskin Sep 11, 2004 06:36 PM

I just got 2 Mali Uros today. My question is when the smaller of the 2 is under the basking light he opens his mouth and his throat moves up and down. Is this normal or could there be a problem. The basking spot is 120 deg they are both together in a 40 gal breeder.I am going to be putting them in a 4` x 2` x 2` cage real soon. Is it ok to keep 2 of them together I was told one is a male the smaller one and the larger one is a female. I gave them some food alittle bit ago and the big one came and ate alot and the little one didnt even touch it. Do I need to keep a water dish in there or do they get enough from there food. Sorry about all the ? I have been looking up stuff all day on them and couldnt find any answers to these ? Thanks for any help. Steve

hey there. congrats on your new babes! check out the three links at the top of the uro main page, urotopia, pro exotics and deer fern farms, or something like that i am bad with names, but they all have great info on them and the kingsnake.com care sheet page has some good info too. if you look a couple days down you will also see a new mail title and there could be some ideas as to why the little guys is not eating, but since you have two malis, intimidation could be a factor but i have never kept two together so i will let someone else answer the housing question. but what are their sizes?
anyway, the mali was gaping or panting. i am surprised you have never seen your beardeds do it, maybe without the throat action. it is simply when they are basking and too lazy to move so they release heat through their mouth. i love to watch helga do it

>>I just got 2 Mali Uros today. My question is when the smaller of the 2 is under the basking light he opens his mouth and his throat moves up and down. Is this normal or could there be a problem. (No, just regulating their body temperature ) The basking spot is 120 deg they are both together in a 40 gal breeder .I am going to be putting them in a 4` x 2` x 2` cage real soon. Is it ok to keep 2 of them together I was told one is a male the smaller one and the larger one is a female. There can be a problem with the larger one not letting the smaller one eat, even though it may not be a visible thing. Are they new roomies? Or were they always together? If new to being together AND new to you, you really shouldn't put them together until they acclimate. Even after the "bast practices" are followed, you should have two feed dishes, two hides and two basking spots to help relieve any stress ) Do I need to keep a water dish in there or do they get enough from there food (Shouldn't need a dish ). Sorry about all the ? I have been looking up stuff all day on them and couldnt find any answers to these ? Thanks for any help. Steve
